Luca Maffei

A gifted ‘nose,’ he was born into a family with a tradition of working with perfumes in 1985 and is a promising young addition to the Italian industry. Luca Maffei made his official entry into this world in 2007, at the end of his studies of the classics and economics, as an assistant perfumer in the family company. 

Artistic Perfumery

He embarked on an individual training course under the wing of Françoise Marin, perfumer and former principal of the prestigious Givaudan-Roure perfumery school in Grasse. Returning to Italy, he joined M&M Fragrances and made his first perfumes. In 2011 he created the fragrance ‘Cuoio Nobile’ for Pineider, which was placed on the shortlist in the category ‘Best Niche Perfume 2012’ by the Accademia del Profumo. In 2013 he took part in the contest organized by Esxence – the Scent of Excellence for creators of fragrance under 30 with his perfume ‘Iris Magnifica’, dedicated to the favourite flower of Italian perfumery.

In 2014 Luca Maffei became a member of the prestigious SFP (Société Française des Parfumeurs), an association of the most important names in world perfumery. The same year he was nominated for the international award Les Talents du Luxe et de la Création by the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d’Arte.

 In 2015, in Los Angeles, the perfume Black Pepper&Sandalwood created by Luca Maffei for Acca Kappa was proclaimed the winner of the prestigious Art and Olfaction Awards in the Independent category.

in addition to developing fragrances for prominent and niche perfumeries, Luca Maffei has created olfactory installations, like the one for Venini on the occasion of HOMI Milano, as well as perfuming prestigious locations like the Museo Ferrari at Maranello, Vivienne Westwood’s Milanese showroom, Cosmoprof Bologna and MIDO Milano. He currently works as master perfumer at AFM (Atelier Fragranze Milano), the first firm in Italy to offer Ecocert certification, provided by a French body that operates throughout Europe and admits the use solely of raw materials guaranteed to be of organic origin.
