Roberto Innocenti

Roberto Innocenti, born at Bagno a Ripoli (Florence) in 1940, is one of the most important illustrators in Italy. He trained as a graphic designer in the 1960s before moving at the age of just eighteen to Rome, where he initially worked on animated films and then devoted himself chiefly to graphic and poster design.

In 1983 he had a fundamental encounter with the Swiss illustrator Etienne Delessert, who commissioned from him the illustrations for the fairy story of Cinderella. At the same meeting Innocenti showed Delessert the first four panels of Rose Blanche, which would be published in the United States and various European countries in 1985, but in Italy not until 1990. It was Rose Blanche that brought him the first marks of recognition and important awards like the Golden Apple in Bratislava, the Gustav Heinemann Peace Prize in Essen and the Das rote Tuch prize in Berlin. Between 1985 and 1987 he worked for the magazine Time Life on the series of illustrated books The Enchanted World. Between the 1980s and 2000s some of his finest works were published: The Adventures of Pinocchio, A Christmas Carol, The Nutcracker, The Last Resort and Erika’s Story.
