William Bertoia

Born at Casarsa della Delizia (Pordenone) in 1943, he attended the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli in Spilimbergo, from where he took a diploma in 1961 and then immediately started work at a local marble quarry.

Mosaic / Stone

Over the following years he took on various professional roles in the commercial sector, culminating in his becoming the sole proprietor of a firm making mosaics by hand and then in the foundation of Friul Mosaic, a company for the production of artistic and decorative mosaics that is now the national leader in the sector. The company employs several craftsmen from the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli and realizes important mosaics for public and private locations. Among the more refined public works carried out by Friul Mosaic, the mosaics for the Mater Dei Chapel in Rome, interventions in the mosaics of the Foro Italico on the occasion of the 1990 World Cup, part of the Galleria Alberto Sordi in Rome, works in the Sanctuary in Nairobi, the mosaics for the Metro station of Charleroi in Belgium. And again, the interventions carried out in magnificent private homes in Russia, the United States, Japan, the Middle East and Brazil. From 1982 to 1986 Bertoia taught mosaic.

In 2008 he held courses for apprentices in the natural stone and marble sector, passing on to his pupils with passion his art and his profound knowledge of the history of mosaic, as well as his experience as a successful entrepreneur in the sector. His teaching activity has even extended beyond the country’s borders: he has held introductory courses to the profession of mosaicist in Brazil.

He is the author of various publications, including the recent Meraviglie del Mosaico: Viaggio nella storia dell’arte musiva (2015). The Confartigianato of Pordenone and the Region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia have both bestowed on him the official title of Master Mosaicist.
